But first, a story. It is the narrative of human relationship. Relationship Keeps Failing
Before we could care deeply about somebody else, we have to know something about their own life story. As stories evoke empathy. Stories allow us to envision ourselves in someone else’s shoes. Relationship Keeps Failing
Stories form the foundation of all human connection. They construct the sensation of a shared lifestyle experience.
It is odd, but true, that we could also find ourselves rooting for criminals and thieves so long as we all see that their story unfold. Films like Ocean’s Eleven and The Italian Job illustrate that nicely.
From the movie, Ocean’s Eleven, celebrities George Clooney, Brad Pitt, and Matt Damon produce for a cast of likable thieves. But beyond their great looks, we get dragged into the story. We discover what’s driving Danny Ocean’s motivation to rob a casino. A casino which just happens to be possessed by his ex-wife’s new lover.
We can empathize with the pain of Danny Ocean. And by the movie’s end, we’re really rooting for him to get away with it. To steal the money and disappear into the sunset with his ex-wife, Tess, by his side.
Maybe stranger still is the way we react to fiction in the first place. A novelist could get me to the edge of my seat, rooting for someone who doesn’t even exist in real life.
Literary critics may scoff, but I liked the twilight series by Stephanie Meyer. I believe my hand was actually trembling from adrenaline as the Volturi began to march across the area, intent on ruining Isabella’s daughter.
But wait, that’s all make-believe. So how can it cause a physical reaction in my own body?
The answer, obviously, is that the power of story.Relationship Keeps Failing
Since ancient times, stories have been the primary means by which humans communicated important information. Because of that, our minds are literally wired for story.
Stories affect our emotions. They’re at the heart of communicating. Allowing us to feel connected to each other.
